Cell Dishes II
An update to the original Cell dish design which I submitted to Shapeways’ 2011 ICFF competition.
Cell dishes were guided by investigations in the digital craft movement – how new digital production methods can profoundly change traditional craft design – in this case ceramics. Through these investigation I examined the dialog between CAD space and the production space of the manufacturer and how to leverage each to their maximum potential.
While digital fabrication allows for higher degrees of design complexity leading, one must keep in mind the specific material being used for the final product and its behaviour, to fully exploit this new material practice. With these constraints in place, material thinking then shifts to a sequence of design thinking.
