KINEMA pendant luminaire

The Kinema pendant luminaire is unique in its ability to give the user control of the light’s character to match the mood or the environment.

Each of the pendant’s rings can be individually flipped to create dramatic light and shadow effects, as a single object or in multiples.

Inspired by the movement of crustaceans, a wide variety of forms can be created by arranging the pendant’s rings in alternating open and closed positions.

It is through this control of light and shadow that a richer experience can be had compared to traditional modern lighting.

Kinema is available brushed brass and black, brushed aluminum and black, white and black or blue and white. Custom color combinations are available upon request.

Dimensions: 10″ x 12″ x 14″ tall

Wonka Discoveries Collection

Client : Willy Wonka (A Division of Nestlè)

Objective : Create confections and retail environments that leave consumers saying ‘Only WONKA could do something like that!’

Design Development : Conducted extensive consumer research and spacial explorations aimed at creating more shareable confectionary rituals, giving candy more adult appeal, and making candy more artisanal.

Deliverables : The project concept delivered a collection of confections direct from the lab and the adventures of Willy Wonka. Our design direction was infl uenced by molecular gastronomy, where the social, artistic and technical components of food creation are constantly being challenged.

By creating a unique, layered experience for the retail environment, WONKA was able to be repositioned as a premium brand. Inspirations were taken from the story and movies while looking towards the future of consumer expectations to make an impact and ensure the “wow” factor.

Custom POP fixtures, displays and furnishing were designed and fabricated for the final presentation to the client.

SHU Living – Yokohama, Japan

Back from four months living in Japan. The main research+design project was SHU Living which focused on designing sustainable living solutions for the Japanese market. This project was exhibited at the Sprial Gallery in central Tokyo.

The full presentation can be viewed below.

Grasshopper definitions were used to construct the framework for the solar canopy and sound barrier.

SAN PEDRO Science Center – San Pedro, CA

The SAN PEDRO Science Center provides an active learning environment to educate children and adults on the area’s diverse marine biology. With a range of exhibits and seminars open to the public, the Science Center’s goal is to make learning a memorable experience.

The Science Center’s building design is inspired by the dynamic motion of the ocean’s waves, and it’s louvered glass-canopy panels can trace their form and layout back to the goose barnacles found throughout the surrounding tidepools.

The Center is designed with four key elements to minimize the use of energy concumption: power via solar panels, repurposed steel to construct the main and secondary building structures, maximum natural light throughout the day via the glass-canopy, and natural climate controlling via temperature responsive roof vents.

Utilizing the latest in solar array technology, the Science Center is able to run daily operations “off the grid”.  The array is positioned to maximize the collection of sunshine throughout the day.

Maintaining an even climate throughout the day and night is important to visitor and animals alike.  Themo-actuated roof vents open and close when the inside temperature goes above or below preset limits.

One highlight to the Science Center is the neighboring lifeguard station. Featuring the latest in thermal imaging and communications technology, visitors are kept safe while exploring the San Pedro coastline.

The 18th Annual AIA LAIAC Design+Build Competition

The team of Stuart Fingerhut and Olivia Paden represented Art Center at the 18th AIA Los Angeles Interior Architecture Committee 1:2 Student Competition.

It was an intense one day charette sponsored by the AIA LAIAC for an actual existing non-profit client, Club 21 based in Pasadena, CA.  Twelve schools from around Southern California were given an invitation to participate.

Round one of the competition was a crit by the judges of all projects, then six finalist teams were picked to verbally present their projects.

Our team took third place with a $4000.00 award.

Underwater Illumination Simulation

The goal of this project was to simulate the experience of being underwater.

The installation was accomplished using a projector, mirror, tub of water and canopy of white foam core panel.

Underneath visitors were invited to lie down on a 3/4 inflated air mattress and view the projected images.
